Tyrus Raymond Cobb was born on December 18, 1886, in Narrows (Banks County), Georgia, and grew up in Royston, Georgia, where he attended Royston High School and fell in love with baseball under the watchful eye of his schoolteacher father, who both encouraged and demanded his son pursue excellence. Cobb signed with the Detroit Tigers at age 18 and played 24 seasons of professional baseball, producing what many historians consider the greatest career statistical record in baseball history: a lifetime batting average of .366 — the highest in major league history — 12 American League batting titles (including nine consecutive), 4,189 career hits, and a stolen base record of 892 that stood for 47 years. Cobb was famous not only for his exceptional bat but for his ferociously aggressive baserunning — he is credited with sliding spikes-high into bases to intimidate infielders, and he played with an intensity that made him one of the most feared and hated opponents in the sport. He led the Tigers to three consecutive AL pennants (1907, 1908, 1909) and won the first American League MVP award in 1911 with a .420 batting average. His complex personality — charismatic and brilliant on the field, difficult and often cruel off it — has made him one of baseball's most controversial figures; biographers have debated whether the dark stories of his later years obscure the sport's most dominant talent. He was the first player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, receiving the most votes of the inaugural class. Born in Banks County, grew up in Royston, Georgia.
