Timothy Richard Tebow was born on August 14, 1987, in Makati, Philippines (where his parents were Christian missionaries), and grew up in Ponte Vedra, Florida, attending Nease High School in St. Johns County. He chose the University of Florida, where he became one of the most celebrated college football players of any generation: a two-time national champion under coach Urban Meyer in 2006 and 2008, a 2007 Heisman Trophy winner (the first sophomore in Heisman history to win the award), and a player whose combination of physical power, leadership, and public Christian faith made him a polarizing and magnetic national figure. The Denver Broncos selected him 25th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft, and in 2011 Tebow sparked one of the most improbable postseason runs in recent NFL history — engineering multiple fourth-quarter comeback wins and then throwing an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime in the Wild Card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the most dramatic moments in recent postseason history. He later pursued a professional baseball career in the New York Mets organization. His legacy in college football — particularly at Florida — is as secure as any player in the sport's modern history.
