Timothy Matthew Howard was born on March 6, 1979, in North Brunswick, New Jersey, and attended North Brunswick Township High School, where he developed as a goalkeeper while also managing the symptoms of Tourette syndrome — a neurological condition he has spoken about publicly to inspire others. He joined the New York/New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer in 1998 and quickly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the country. Manchester United purchased him in 2003, and while he played behind Edwin van der Sar and was eventually loaned to Everton FC of the Premier League in 2006, that loan became permanent — and Howard spent a decade at Goodison Park becoming one of the most beloved players in Everton's history, making 903 Premier League saves. The moment that defined his legacy came on July 1, 2014, at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil: in a Round of 16 match against Belgium, Howard made 16 saves — the most recorded in a single World Cup match — in an electrifying performance that kept the United States in a match they ultimately lost 2-1 in extra time. The image of Howard went viral instantly; social media flooded with jokes naming him "Secretary of Defense." He earned 121 caps for the US Men's National Team, a record at the time of his retirement.
