Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and moved with her family to Compton, California as a toddler, where her father Richard began coaching her and her sister Venus on public courts. She turned professional at 14 and went on to win 23 Grand Slam singles titles — the most by any player in the Open Era and second-most in history. Williams won at least one Grand Slam in four separate decades, dominated women's tennis for more than 20 years, and won four Olympic gold medals. A cultural icon who broke barriers of race and gender in a historically exclusionary sport, Williams was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024.
