Rocky Marciano was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano in Brockton, Massachusetts, the son of Italian immigrants, and remains the only heavyweight champion in history to retire undefeated — 49 fights, 49 wins, 43 knockouts. Fighting out of Brockton in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Marciano won the heavyweight title in 1952 by knocking out Jersey Joe Walcott and successfully defended it six times. Despite lacking the reach and height of most champions, his relentless aggression, extraordinary conditioning, and devastating right hand made him nearly impossible to stop. He retired voluntarily in 1956 at the height of his powers. Marciano was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990 and remains a symbol of blue-collar New England pride.
