Robin Roberts was born in Springfield, Illinois and attended Springfield High School before a year at Michigan State University led to a signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1948. The durable right-hander led the National League in wins four consecutive years (1952–1955), including a 28-win campaign in 1952. A six-time All-Star, Roberts completed 305 of 609 career starts and struck out 2,357 batters, all while rarely issuing walks. He finished with a 286-245 record and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
