Raymond Allen was born on July 20, 1975, at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California, but grew up in the Dalzell area near Sumter, South Carolina, where his father was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base. He attended Hillcrest High School in the Sumter area before going on to the University of Connecticut, where he was a two-time Big East Player of the Year. Selected 5th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1996 NBA Draft, Allen became the most prolific three-point shooter in the history of professional basketball — finishing his career with 2,973 made three-pointers, an all-time record he held until it was surpassed by Stephen Curry. Allen was a ten-time NBA All-Star and a precise, disciplined shooter who combined elite athleticism with a supremely consistent release. He was a key contributor to the Boston Celtics' 2008 NBA championship alongside Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and then delivered perhaps the single most dramatic shot in NBA Finals history: his corner three-pointer with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals to force overtime, enabling the Miami Heat to survive and win the series in Game 7. Allen won his second championship with that Miami team. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. Grew up near Sumter, South Carolina.
