Pam Shriver was born on July 4, 1962, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Lutherville, attending the McDonogh School in Owings Mills. She turned professional at age 16 and immediately announced herself on the world stage: in 1978, at just 16 years old, she reached the final of the US Open — the youngest US Open finalist since Maureen Connolly in 1951 — before losing to Chris Evert. While Shriver won only one singles Grand Slam semifinal thereafter, she became the dominant force in women's doubles of her era. Partnering with Martina Navratilova, she formed the greatest doubles team in tennis history, winning 20 Grand Slam doubles titles together and holding the world No. 1 doubles ranking for years. Shriver won 21 Grand Slam doubles titles in total (including one with Navratilova at the 1988 Seoul Olympics), a 109-match Grand Slam doubles winning streak at one point, and the year-end doubles championship nine times. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002. Attended McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland.
