Nate Thurmond was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, and attended Central-Hower High School before going to Bowling Green State University. A 7× NBA All-Star center with the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors, Thurmond was widely regarded as the most complete defensive center of his era — capable of guarding Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell at the height of their powers. On October 18, 1974, he recorded the first official quadruple-double in NBA history: 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, and 12 blocks for the Chicago Bulls. Known for his dignity and professionalism as much as his skill, Thurmond later became a beloved figure in the Bay Area and ran a restaurant called "Big Nate's BBQ" in San Francisco for 20 years. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985.
