Michael Nelson Trout was born on August 7, 1991, in Millville, New Jersey, and attended Millville Senior High School, where he was a multi-sport standout. The Los Angeles Angels selected him 25th overall in the 2009 MLB Draft, and Trout reached the majors in 2011, immediately announcing himself as something unprecedented. By his age-20 season in 2012, he was arguably the best player in baseball: a center fielder with elite speed, a cannon arm, the instincts of a Gold Glover, a right-handed swing that produces extraordinary exit velocity, and the plate discipline of a veteran twice his age. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award that year. In the years that followed, Trout won three AL MVP awards (2014, 2016, 2019) and finished second in MVP voting six other times. He made 12 consecutive All-Star teams before injuries began interrupting his seasons in his 30s. His career WAR (Wins Above Replacement) through his healthy years placed him on a trajectory to become one of the five or six greatest players in baseball history.
