Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he attended Emsley A. Laney High School. As a sophomore, Jordan was placed on the JV team rather than the varsity — a perceived slight that he later credited with fueling his legendary work ethic and competitive drive. He went on to the University of North Carolina, where he hit the national championship-winning jump shot against Georgetown in his freshman year (1982). Selected 3rd overall by the Chicago Bulls in 1984, Jordan became the most celebrated player in basketball history: 6 NBA championships (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998), all with the Chicago Bulls; 6 Finals MVPs; 5 regular season MVPs; 14 All-Star selections; 10 scoring titles; 2 Olympic gold medals (1984, 1992 Dream Team); and a .497 career field-goal percentage that remains the highest for a shooting guard in NBA history. His competitiveness, air time, and sheer dominance redefined what was possible in the sport. He is universally considered the greatest basketball player of all time.
