Mae Louise Suggs was born on September 7, 1923, in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of a golfer who eventually managed a golf course in Lithia Springs (near Atlanta). Growing up with a club in her hand and a course as her backyard, Suggs developed into the finest female golfer of her generation, winning the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1947 and the British Ladies Amateur in 1948 — becoming one of the first American women to win the British title. She turned professional in 1948 and became a founding member and charter player of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA Tour) in 1950. Suggs went on to win 58 LPGA Tour events, including 11 major championships — the U.S. Women's Open (1949, 1952), the LPGA Championship (1957), and multiple Titleholders Championships and Western Opens (which were considered majors in that era). Known for her precision, consistent ball-striking, and graceful swing, she was one of the dominant forces in women's golf from the late 1940s through the mid-1960s. The Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year Award on the LPGA Tour is named in her honor. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1951 as one of its charter members.
