Lou Brock was born on June 18, 1939, in El Dorado, Arkansas, and grew up to become one of the most dangerous baserunners in the history of professional baseball. He spent the first three years of his career with the Chicago Cubs before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964 in one of the most lopsided deals in baseball history — a trade that gave the Cardinals a player who immediately helped them win the 1964 World Series. Brock went on to win a second World Series with St. Louis in 1967. He set the single-season stolen base record with 118 in 1974 at the age of 35, shattering the existing record, and retired with 938 career steals — a record he held until Rickey Henderson surpassed it in 1991. Brock batted .293 lifetime with 3,023 hits and was one of the premier leadoff hitters and offensive catalysts of his era. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 in his first year of eligibility.
