Larry Gardner was born in Enosburg Falls, Vermont, and became one of the most reliable third basemen of the Deadball Era — a quiet, consistent player whose contributions were essential to three Boston Red Sox World Series championships. He was a key member of the legendary Red Sox teams of 1912, 1915, and 1916, batting in crucial spots and providing steady defense at third base. Gardner hit the sacrifice fly that drove in the winning run in Game 8 of the 1912 World Series, one of the most celebrated plays in Red Sox history. He later played for the Cleveland Indians, winning a fourth World Series ring in 1920. Gardner remains one of the most accomplished athletes ever produced by the Green Mountain State.
