Kyrie Andrew Irving was born on March 23, 1992, in Melbourne, Australia, where his father Drederick Irving was playing professional basketball, and grew up in West Orange, New Jersey, after the family returned to the United States. He attended St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth — the most celebrated basketball program in New Jersey — where he was a consensus McDonald's All-American and the top-ranked point guard in the country. One year at Duke University under Coach Mike Krzyzewski (averaging 17.5 points per game in just 11 games before a toe injury ended his season) was enough for the Cleveland Cavaliers to select him first overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. Irving became one of the most gifted ball-handlers and mid-range scorers in NBA history, with a handle and finishing ability at the rim that few players in any era have matched. He was a seven-time NBA All-Star. His defining moment came in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors — with the Cavaliers trailing 89-88 with 53 seconds remaining, Irving pulled up from the left wing over Klay Thompson and calmly sank a three-pointer that gave Cleveland the lead, and with LeBron James's subsequent block, the Cavaliers won the championship in the most celebrated comeback (from 3-1 down) in Finals history.
