John Kruk is a beloved baseball personality — both for his playing career and his candid, self-deprecating humor. He grew up in Keyser, West Virginia, and starred in both baseball and basketball at Keyser High School. Signed by the San Diego Padres in 1981, Kruk developed into one of the best contact hitters of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was a 3× MLB All-Star (1991, 1992, 1993) who batted .300 in 10 major league seasons with the Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago White Sox. He was a key member of the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies — one of the most entertaining teams in baseball history — who reached the World Series. Known for his portly physique and wit, Kruk famously told a female fan who called him a baseball player, "Lady, I'm no athlete — I'm a baseball player." Attended Keyser High School in Keyser, West Virginia.
