Jack Nicklaus grew up in Upper Arlington, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, and attended Upper Arlington High School. He was a golf prodigy, winning two U.S. Amateur titles before turning professional in 1961. He went on to win 18 professional major championships — a record that still stands and may never be broken: 6 Masters titles, 4 U.S. Opens, 3 British Opens, and 5 PGA Championships. His greatest triumph came at the 1986 Masters, when a 46-year-old "Golden Bear" came from behind on Sunday to shoot a back-nine 30 and win his sixth green jacket in one of the most celebrated performances in sports history. In an era when Arnold Palmer was the people's champion, Nicklaus was the game's supreme talent — winning more than anyone and competing at the top level for three decades. He was a founding member of the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.
