Hal Greer was a Basketball Hall of Fame guard from Huntington, West Virginia, whose talent transcended the segregation barriers of his era. At Frederick Douglass High School — a segregated Black high school in Huntington — Greer developed into a shooting guard of exceptional skill. He went on to become the first African-American to play for a major West Virginia college team (Marshall College). Drafted by the Syracuse Nationals in 1958, he spent his entire 15-year NBA career with the Syracuse/Philadelphia franchise, averaging 19.2 points per game and earning 10 All-Star selections. He won an NBA championship with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1967 on what many consider the greatest team in NBA history. He shot his free throws as jump shots and was named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players. Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982.
