Delino DeShields was born in Seaford, Delaware, and was one of the most exciting leadoff hitters and base stealers of the 1990s. Drafted third overall by the Montreal Expos in 1987, DeShields played 13 major league seasons and stole 463 career bases — ranking among the top base stealers in baseball history. He was best known for the controversial trade in which the Expos sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Pedro Martinez — one of the most lopsided trades in the modern era, as Martinez went on to become one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. DeShields was a four-time 40+ stolen base season performer and a key contributor to several playoff teams. He remains the most celebrated sports figure from the southern Delaware peninsula.
