Christy Mathewson was born in Factoryville, Pennsylvania, in Wyoming County, and attended Keystone Academy before going on to Bucknell University. He joined the New York Giants in 1900 and became the greatest pitcher of the Dead Ball Era and one of the most admired athletes of his generation — not only for his dominance on the mound, but for his character off it. Mathewson won 373 games over 17 seasons (tied for 3rd all-time), threw 80 career shutouts, and developed the "fadeaway" pitch (now called the screwball) that baffled batters for years. In the 1905 World Series he threw 3 complete game shutouts in 6 days. He was among the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
