Christy Martin is a pioneering women's boxing champion from Mullens, West Virginia, who helped bring women's boxing to mainstream audiences. She attended Mullens High School, where she was a 2× all-state basketball player before discovering boxing. Martin became WBC women's lightweight champion and was known for her aggressive, crowd-pleasing style. She rose to national prominence when she appeared on the undercard of Mike Tyson's fights in the 1990s and was named Female Fighter of the Year multiple times by Ring Magazine. Her courage and toughness inside the ring — and her public battle with adversity outside of it — made her one of the most inspiring figures in West Virginia sports history.
