Larry Wayne "Chipper" Jones Jr. was born on April 24, 1972, in DeLand, Florida, and grew up in Pierson (Volusia County), attending The Bolles School in Jacksonville — one of Florida's elite prep programs. The Atlanta Braves selected him first overall in the 1990 MLB Draft, making him the top pick in the country out of high school. He spent his entire 19-year major league career with the Braves — the last player to spend his whole career with the franchise that originally drafted him #1 overall — and became the most beloved player in Atlanta sports history. As a switch-hitting third baseman, Jones combined rare power from both sides of the plate with exceptional plate discipline and surprising athleticism in the field. He was an eight-time All-Star, won the 1999 NL MVP award, batted .303 lifetime, and was a central figure on the Atlanta Braves teams that won 14 consecutive division titles from 1991 to 2005 — the longest divisional dynasty in the history of American professional sports. He was the model of the complete ballplayer: he walked as often as he struck out, hit for both average and power, and fielded his position with professional grace. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, appearing on 97.2% of ballots in his first year of eligibility. Born in DeLand, grew up in Pierson, Florida.
