Charlie Gehringer was born in Fowlerville, Michigan, and became one of the most consistent hitters in baseball history over an 19-year career with the Detroit Tigers (1924–1942). Known as "The Mechanical Man" for his clockwork reliability, the second baseman hit .320 lifetime, won the 1937 AL batting title (.371) and MVP Award, and was a six-time All-Star. He helped the Tigers win their first World Series championship in 1935. Few players in the game's history combined such offensive and defensive excellence with such quiet consistency. Gehringer was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1949.
