Carl Lee Eller was born on January 25, 1942, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and attended Atkins High School — a historically significant segregation-era Black institution that had been educating African American students in Forsyth County since 1931. Eller went on to the University of Minnesota, where he was a consensus All-American defensive end, and was selected 6th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1964 AFL/NFL Draft. He spent 15 seasons with the Vikings (1964–1978) and became one of the most dominant pass rushers of his era, anchoring the legendary "Purple People Eaters" defensive line alongside Alan Page, Gary Larsen, and Jim Marshall. That defensive unit led the Vikings to four Super Bowl appearances. A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Eller had ferocious speed, strength, and technique that made him nearly unblockable in his prime — the original blueprint for the elite 4-3 defensive end. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
