Brett Lorenzo Favre was born on October 10, 1969, in Gulfport, Mississippi, and grew up in Kiln (Hancock County) in a family where football was a way of life — his father, Irvin Favre, was the head football coach and athletic director at Hancock North Central High School, where Brett played quarterback, safety, wide receiver, punter, and kicker. He went to the University of Southern Mississippi on a scholarship and began his NFL career as a second-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 1991. After being traded to the Green Bay Packers in 1992, he seized the starting role and did not give it up for 16 years. What followed was one of the most sustained, celebrated, and ultimately complicated careers in NFL history. He won three consecutive NFL MVP awards (1995, 1996, 1997) and a fourth in 2007 — the only player in league history to win three straight. He led the Green Bay Packers to victory in Super Bowl XXXI following the 1996 season. He started an NFL-record 297 consecutive regular-season games. He threw for 71,838 career passing yards and 508 touchdowns — records at the time of his retirement. He was also intercepted 336 times, also a record. He played with a gunslinger's fearlessness and improvisational genius that made him thrilling to watch and occasionally maddening to coach; his relationship with the game was passionate to the point of consuming, and his final years — marked by multiple retirements and returns — were a public drama that polarized fans in ways his play alone never had. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. Born in Gulfport, grew up in Kiln, Mississippi.
