Billy Kidd was born in Burlington, Vermont, and became the first American man to win an Olympic alpine skiing medal, capturing the silver at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Games in slalom — an achievement that changed the trajectory of American alpine skiing. Six years later, at the 1970 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in Val Gardena, Italy, he won the combined event, becoming the first American man to win a World Championship title in alpine skiing. Kidd was known for his signature cowboy hat and his commitment to growing the sport in America. He was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 1979 and spent decades as the ski director at Steamboat Resort in Colorado, mentoring generations of American racers.
