Andre Nolan Dawson was born on July 10, 1954, in Miami, Florida, and grew up in the Liberty City neighborhood, attending Miami Northwestern Senior High School before going on to Florida A&M University. The Montreal Expos selected him 11th overall in the 1975 amateur draft, and over a 21-year major league career he became one of the most complete players of his generation. Nicknamed "The Hawk" for his bearing and intensity, Dawson combined exceptional power at the plate — 438 career home runs — with the finest defensive play of any outfielder of his era, winning eight Gold Gloves in right field. His signature season came in 1987 when, playing for the Chicago Cubs after taking a pay cut to escape the artificial turf in Montreal that was destroying his knees, he hit 49 home runs and drove in 137 runs to win the NL MVP award — becoming the only player in baseball history to win the MVP on a last-place team. It is a testament to how dominantly he performed that the award was not even close. He was an eight-time All-Star and is regarded by former players and managers of his era as one of the most feared complete players in the game. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010. Born and raised in Miami, Florida.
