Alexander English was born on January 5, 1954, in Columbia, South Carolina, and attended Dreher High School, where he began developing the remarkably fluid offensive game that would define his career. He played college basketball at the University of South Carolina and was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 1976 NBA Draft. English is best known as the heart of the Denver Nuggets' spectacular run-and-gun offense in the 1980s — he scored more points than any player in the entire NBA during that decade, from 1982 through 1989, averaging 25.9 points per game and being named to eight consecutive All-Star Games from 1982 to 1989. He led the Nuggets in scoring for nine straight seasons and holds the franchise record for career points with 21,645. His scoring prowess was built on one of the most textbook-perfect shooting forms of his era — a silky mid-range game combined with relentless movement off the ball. His offensive mastery was perhaps best captured in the 1994 film "Blue Chips," in which he played a college coach. He retired with 25,613 career points, placing him in the top 20 in NBA history at the time. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
