Little Rock, AR — Private HBCU, est. 1877; home of the Panthers; affiliated with the United Methodist Church; one of the historically Black colleges and universities in Arkansas, founded just twelve years after the end of the Civil War; located in Little Rock, the state capital, giving its students access to the full range of state government, healthcare, and business opportunities available in Arkansas's largest city; strong programs in social work, business, and education; like all HBCUs, Philander Smith was founded to provide higher education to Black Americans who were barred from white institutions, and its survival and continuity represent a testament to the aspirations of the Black community of Arkansas across 150 years
